Motivational Interview & CBT Training Going Above and Beyond

Coach training DSAL youth

DSAL continues to envision ways in which our community grows safer, stronger, and better supported through our multi-faceted programming.

Recently, our entire Rec staff team completed the Motivational Interview Training, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Training programs through Udemy.

We chose these programs for our coaches, to provide them and the youth they serve with a new set of tools and techniques that help individuals more easily overcome barriers, make positive changes, and achieve their goals.

CBT is the gold standard of psychotherapy because of its proven effectiveness in improving mental health and wellbeing. It uses the cognitive model to help us better understand ourselves our challenges, and uses a series of cognitive and behavioral strategies to make positive changes in our lives so that we feel, and do better.

We are so proud of our coaches for continuing to learn and grow, and we are excited to see them in action with these new tools going forward. Our youth have unlimited potential, and now we have one more key to unlocking it. Go team!

Did You Know? - Mustard Greens!

Mustard Greens contain many of the micronutrients our bodies need on a daily basis while also being rich in fiber.

One cup (56 grams) of uncooked and chopped mustard greens is only 15 calories but contains 44% of the Daily Value (DV) for Vitamin C and 120% of the DV for Vitamin K.

One cup (140 grams) of cooked mustard greens increases the DV levels of Vitamin A to 96% and Vitamin K to 960%.

The concentration of Vitamin K and Vitamin C makes this vegetable a great addition to one’s diet as these vitamins may help ensure bone and heart health along with providing an immunity boost. This superfood, although it has many different varieties, generally has high amounts of antioxidants which help protect us from diseases that are linked to oxidative stress.

Find mustard greens and other superfoods in our locally grown CSA Bags that can be purchased through the ALL IN Eats website.

Rene - Thank Que Grill

DSAL’s Featured Business of the Month

Thank Que Grill Opens a Brick-and-Mortar Location!

If you haven't heard the big news yet, one of our food vendors #ChefAlldayRene - the owner of Thank Que Grill - is opening a brick-and-mortar location at 1920 Dennision St. in Oakland!

Rene participated in the community meals program during the pandemic, preparing 500 meals a week for folks who needed assistance during quarantine. Our Food Hub kitchen has provided him with the space and equipment he needed for his catering and pop-up events throughout the Bay Area, while fine-tuning his menu that will be available at his Oakland location.

Grand opening coming soon!

"First things first, I want to say Thank you from Thank Que Grill for all your help and support for the past 1.5 years . You all have played a huge part of making this next chapter of my journey as a restaurateur happen.

Starting a restaurant is a dream for many. The journey from that dream to reality is far from easy, but with your support my dream is now a reality. For that I am truly grateful and truly appreciate the DSAL events that I catered for, community meals program during the covid 19 pandemic (which I saved to fund this restaurant project), community events, and your efforts to ensure all the vendors are up to date with any grants opportunities one may qualify for.

Thank you from Thank Que Grill for all the support and I can't wait to share our new space with you all soon!"

Rec Soccer Participant Oscar Rodriguez

Rec Soccer Participant Oscar Rodriguez is DSAL’s Athlete of the Month

Our Coach Miciah nominated Oscar to be our Athlete of the Month. Miciah reports that Oscar is a respectable young man who participates in our futsal program and also referees. He always helps clean up the fields, and will take any reffing job, even on short notice.

Oscar has participated since DSAL began, and has seen the evolution of the soccer program. Being a DSAL Kid and now an adult, Oscar is successful in life, and a large part of that stems from him growing up with DSAL. Oscar’s presence in our referee pool is huge, as is his importance to our staff.

"The program helps me all around - financially it helps me earn extra income (referee program), physically and mentally it helps me stay fit and participate in the futsal program that I love.

My favorite part is staying fit and connecting with new faces. Competition in the futsal program is very high. Competing with other great athletes challenges me to do better. I think that the program contributes to a healthier & safer community by teaching good sportsmanship.”
