Welcoming Capt. Gosal - Coming back home to lead the Community Oriented Response and Engagement Unit

I, Gurvinder Gosal began my career with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) in January of 2000 and was a graduate of the 108th Basic Academy.

I’ve had approximately 24.5 years of service with ACSO. I’ve been assigned to Detentions and Corrections, the Airport Police Services, Eden Township Substation (ETS) and Dublin Police Services (DPS), and our ACSO Regional Training Center (RTC). At ETS, I’ve worked as a patrolman, Watch Sergeant and Watch Commander as a Lieutenant. While at ETS as a Deputy, I was assigned to the Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving Unit (COPPS) for 3 years, and as a detective with the Gang Suppression Unit (GSU) for approximately 5 years. At DPS, I was assigned as a Watch Commander at the rank of Sergeant and as the Captain of Operations and Administration.

I’ve held a collateral assignment as a member of the ACSO Special Response Unit (SRU) from 2008 to 2020. During my 12 years with SRU, I was assigned as a Tactical Breacher, Entry Team Operator and Team Leader. I was also an instructor in Chemical Agents and Less Lethal Munitions.

Fate brought me back as the Captain of the Community Policing Unit, now referred to as the Community Oriented Response and Engagement Unit (CORE), which I refer to as coming back home.

I am a graduate of Cal State Hayward, where I earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Also, due to my passion for the sport of basketball, I’ve been coaching for approximately 30 years with the local Hayward YMCA, CYO, AAU, middle school and for the past 7 years, high school basketball in the East Bay.

What excites me most about being the Captain of CORE is the privilege of being part of the unincorporated community of Alameda County and strengthening our relationship, while creating more partnerships with our community and community-based organizations.

I believe youth sports through our local DSAL programs play a crucial role in the development of life skills such as teamwork, leadership, communication, discipline, resilience and goal-setting. Through participation in local community sports programs, youth can learn the value of commitment, hard work, and sportsmanship. These programs provide a platform for young individuals to build relationships, develop social skills, and foster a sense of community and belonging.

Additionally, youth sports encourage healthy habits, promote physical fitness, and teach important values like fair play, respect for others, and dealing with both success and failure. Furthermore, participating in sports can boost self-esteem, confidence, and overall mental well-being.

By engaging in local community sports programs like DSAL, youth have the opportunity to learn from coaches, mentors, and teammates, who can serve as positive role models and provide guidance both on and off the field. These programs also offer a safe and structured environment for young individuals to grow, learn, and thrive.

Community members and officers came out to celebrate National Night Out

Celebrating Community at National Night Out

National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August. Neighborhoods host block parties, festivals, parades, cookouts and various other community events with safety demonstrations, seminars, youth events, visits from emergency personnel, exhibits and much, much more.

This year, DSAL was in attendance for ACSO’s National Night Out on the Hayward Adult School Campus. The Muévete program performed some of their high-energy dance routines that got the crowd excited, and the Boxing and Fitness coaches tabled the event leading facility tours of the Fitness Arena and Boxing Gym for community members interested in trying some of our free programming!
