Celebrating Diversity Month - Embracing What Makes Us Unique, Together

At some point in our lives, each of us has felt unseen or misunderstood - like we didn’t quite fit in. That feeling is part of what makes Diversity Month so important. It reminds us that every person, no matter their background, deserves to be recognized, respected, and welcomed for who they are. We should all feel safe sharing our stories with each other.
Every April, Diversity Month invites us to celebrate the rich mix of cultures, identities, and perspectives that shape our communities. It’s a time to honor heritage and promote respect across differences - reminding us that when all voices are heard and everyone belongs, communities grow stronger, more connected, and more compassionate.
We live these values through our free Health and Fitness programs that uplift youth and adults, our affordable Community Kitchen that supports local food entrepreneurs, and by activating and maintaining safe, welcoming spaces in underserved neighborhoods. When inclusion is a daily practice, amazing things can grow.

This April, we are inviting everyone in the community to take a heartfelt step toward inclusion. You don’t have to do something big to make a difference. A kind word, a shared meal, or a moment of understanding can ripple far beyond what we see.
Think of an action you can take that's important to you, or try one of the following:
Listen to a story different from your own
Celebrate a tradition that’s new to you
Reach out to someone who may feel left out
Each of us is a unique spirit, and together, we create the beautiful tapestry of our community.

Because in the end, what makes us different is also what brings us together, and makes us shine.
20 Years of Community, Connection, and Change

This year marks 🎉20 years🎉 of DSAL working side by side with the community, the Sheriff's Department, and our partners and funders, to build a brighter, safer, and more connected Alameda County!
What began in 2005 as a grassroots effort to bring law enforcement, youth, and residents into alignment has grown into something bigger - an ecosystem rooted in hope, resilience, and long-term investment in people.
Over the past two decades, DSAL has launched and nurtured programs that meet real needs - from free health and fitness programming for youth and adults, to culinary entrepreneurship, food security initiatives, and safe community spaces. These programs aren’t just services - they’re lifelines, helping people feel seen, supported, and empowered in times of need.
In our often overlooked neighborhoods, DSAL has helped activate safe, welcoming spaces where young people learn healthy coping skills, families gather, and neighbors build lasting bonds. When the pandemic deepened community trauma, DSAL doubled down on connection - continuing to show up with food, programming, and presence.
Today, our work is more important than ever. Together with our partners and neighbors, we’ve proven that when we invest in belonging, our communities thrive, and we're so proud of how far we have all come.
To everyone who has played a role in this journey - thank you for being a part of making things better with us. Here’s to 20 years of impact, and to continuing the work that brings us closer, keeps us healthier, and makes us stronger - together.

Boxing Participant Antonio Juarez III is DSAL’s Athlete of the Month
For the past three years, Antonio has been a standout participant in DSAL’s Boxing Program—demonstrating not only athletic excellence, but a deep commitment to personal growth, leadership, and resilience. Balancing boxing and track training, Antonio has shown that discipline and perseverance pay off in every area of life.
Through consistent training and support from our coaches, Antonio has transformed from a quiet, reserved teen into a confident leader. His increased endurance and strength built during early morning boxing runs and challenging workouts, have translated into success on the track, where he recently became a Junior Olympic bronze medalist in the 100-meter dash and a CYO sectional champion.
And Antonio’s journey goes beyond medals.
"This program has taught me discipline, humility, and focus," he says. “It’s helped me stay grounded and strive toward my goals - not just in sports, but in life. I’ve built real friendships here, and we push each other to do better every day.
"Through consistent effort and dedication, participants develop a sense of responsibility and discipline that extends beyond the program. This transformation enables them to make better choices, avoid negative influences, and become productive members of their communities."
Antonio’s journey shows what’s possible when young people have access to spaces where they feel challenged, supported, and inspired. With each training session, he’s becoming a better athlete, and the kind of role model who shows others what’s possible when you don’t give up.
