REACH Fitness Champion Filo Mauia

Since joining the REACH Fitness program last summer, Filo Mauia has discovered a place that combines fitness, friendship, and family.

Filo enjoys being part of a team and helping others, and joined REACH because he loves sports, working out, and getting stronger. More than that, he says the program gives him energy, helps him stay out of trouble, and provides a safe and fun atmosphere where he’s been able to connect with new people.

And Filo has good company! His brothers and sisters paved the way for him to join the Recreation program - specializing in football and volleyball within the program. Now, Filo is preparing to try out for volleyball this winter, and feels that the workout program at REACH is making him stronger and better prepared for it, as well as his future goal of playing football. Being at REACH gives him a sense of belonging alongside his family, and he has already made new friends in the program, expanding his social circle and support network.

When youth feel safe, welcomed, and supported in programs like REACH Fitness, they often welcome their entire families. Research has shown that adolescents whose families actively encourage or participate in extracurricular activities are far more likely to develop lasting healthy habits, experience lower rates of anxiety, depression and obesity, and maintain healthier levels of physical activity over time.

Filo’s participation reflects just that - a small ecosystem of siblings supporting siblings - each motivated to stay active, push themselves, and celebrate one another’s progress. When a family engages together, they create bonds that go beyond the playing field - encouraging, holding each other accountable, and sharing in moments of achievement.

For Filo, this support has helped him grow stronger, more confident, and excited to take on new challenges, making him a standout participant whose dedication and joy leave a lasting mark on everyone around him.
