Ready to hand out food to residents in need

This holiday season, our community came together to support families in need thanks to the hard work and leadership of State Senator Dr. Aisha Wahab. On November 21, the 3rd Annual Free Turkey Giveaway was held in partnership with DSAL, offering Thanksgiving turkeys and essential bags of groceries to families facing food insecurity.

Relief When It Matters Most

While many families in Alameda County continue to face challenges accessing healthy, affordable food, and added pressure after recent SNAP benefit reductions, initiatives like the annual Turkey Giveaway play an important role in providing support. Senator Wahab continues to lead district-wide efforts rooted in compassion, collaboration, and meaningful service.

“People are struggling to keep up with the cost of groceries, gas and rent,” said Senator Wahab. “That’s why my team and I work year-round to deliver real relief through policy and budget efforts focused on housing affordability, wage fairness and food security. Our annual Turkey Giveaway isn’t just a holiday tradition. It’s a reminder that in California, and especially in my district, we take care of each other.”

Now in its third year, the Turkey Giveaway has grown into a lifeline for local families, serving nearly 2,000 residents this season and underscoring Senator Wahab’s commitment to dignity, affordability, and opportunity throughout her district and Alameda County.

Community Partnership in Action

Alongside the Thanksgiving turkeys provided by Senator Wahab, this year’s giveaway was strengthened by a broad coalition of partners who came together to ensure families received the support they deserved. Hot meals were prepared on-site by the 5SikhSeva Food Truck, produce boxes were donated by the Alameda County Community Food Bank, and Pepsi contributed a variety of beverages. Additional holiday essentials - made possible through the support of Kaiser, the San Francisco 49ers, and Fremont Bank -were packed into bags supplied through DSAL and the Senator’s office.

“We are deeply grateful to Senator Wahab for her leadership and continued partnership in addressing the urgent issue of food insecurity. This effort reflects DSAL’s mission to strengthen communities through collaboration, compassion, and service. With the support of our partners, we’re proud to help support families across our county and make sure they have access to the resources and dignity they deserve.” - Patrick, Executive Director @ DSAL.

The results of this effort reflect the spirit of solidarity and care that defines our region. The Turkey Giveaway is more than a holiday event - it’s part of a broader commitment to addressing food insecurity, housing stress, and affordability challenges across Alameda County. Through policy work and community partnership, Senator Wahab and DSAL are helping build long-term support systems for vulnerable families.

And as we prepare for upcoming events, this year’s giveaway serves as a powerful example of what’s possible when neighbors, local leaders, and organizations unite to lift up those who need it most.
