REACH Fitness Champion Tyrel Mauai

Tyrel has been a cornerstone of REACH Fitness for four years, and in that time, he's become more than just one of the program's hardest-working athletes. He's become the kind of member who brings others with him - literally. His older brother, older cousin, and younger cousin have all joined because of Tyrel's experience and enthusiasm for the program!

That ripple effect speaks to something powerful about our free community programs. When youth find a place where they feel supported, challenged, and valued, they don't keep it to themselves. They bring their families along, and grow up strong together.

Tyrel approaches every session with genuine dedication, always willing to help others and participate in any sport offered. While football holds a special place - he's played two seasons as running back and middle linebacker at San Leandro High School, and was named Rookie of the Year(!) - his commitment extends to building overall fitness and learning proper technique across disciplines.

"REACH Recreation has given me a chance to learn about exercise and fitness in many new ways. Working out and weightlifting is fun with others and I love to see progress."

That enjoyment of the process, not just the results, is what keeps Tyrel coming back and improving. Over the years, he's absorbed more than just workout routines. Coach Matt's approach to comprehensive health education has given him healthy tools that extend far beyond the weight room.

"I have learned a lot about nutrition, recovery, heart rate, and other health topics that Coach Matt shares with the class."

For Tyrel, REACH Fitness isn't just a place to train - it's a community that provides something harder to quantify but equally important: a safety net.

"I feel more confident. There is a safety net here. A community of adults who care about us and want us to succeed."

That sense of being supported by adults who genuinely invest in youth outcomes creates an environment where young people can take risks, push themselves, and know they won't be doing it alone. It's the foundation that allows athletes like Tyrel to excel, whether on the football field or in the weight room.

The program's impact shows in tangible ways too. Tyrel's physical transformation over the past few years has directly contributed to his athletic success.

"Over the last couple years I have really gotten stronger and learned new exercises that have helped me excel in sports like football."

In times like these, when free constructive play has become a rare thing, Tyrel recognizes how valuable this opportunity is.

"I think we are lucky to have this program open to us and I love being part of a team and a community."

Word has spread organically. Friends have joined because of what they hear from current members - the kind of authentic endorsement that can't be manufactured. When Tyrel talks about the program, people listen. When he invites someone, they show up. That's the mark of an individual, and a program that are doing something right.

Tyrel's journey at REACH Fitness demonstrates what happens when programs go above and beyond for our youth. By creating a true community - one where multiple generations of a family feel welcome, where adults genuinely care about outcomes, where comprehensive education meets physical training - programs like REACH Fitness build more than stronger athletes. They build stronger families and safer, more connected communities.
