Muevete Champion Mayeli Garcia

Mayeli has been part of DSAL’s Muévete program for six years. In that time, Coach Angie has proudly watched her make meaningful improvements in her physical health while becoming more outgoing, social, and confident.

Today, Mayeli is dedicated and cooperative. The serious young woman who first joined the program has grown into someone who socializes with everyone and carries herself with greater confidence and self-esteem.

For Coach Angie, watching that transformation is a powerful reminder of why this program - and this kind of work - matters.

For Mayeli, Muévete has become about much more than exercise.

“It has helped me a lot, primarily in my physical and mental health. I now have more energy, I believe in myself more, and most importantly I feel happy now.”

That sense of connection is an important part of what keeps Mayeli coming back. She values the support Coach Angie provides, as well as the friendships she has built through the program. She even invited a friend to join after being impressed by how motivational Angie is.

“I enjoy the class, and the complicated things I do at my own pace.”

Having the freedom to challenge herself while moving at her own pace has helped Mayeli stay engaged and continue growing. And the lessons she has gained through the program reach far beyond physical fitness.

“It helped me listen, be tolerant, and be empathetic. Exercising has kept me focused as a person and helped keep me away from problems.”

Six years of consistent participation have given Mayeli far more than the benefits of improved fitness. She has built confidence, relationships, and a stronger sense of herself. And her growth has had an impact on the people around her, too. Her coach is inspired by the changes she has seen in Mayeli, and motivated to continue adding to the welcoming, supportive environment that nurtures participants.

Something that makes programs like Muévete so valuable, is the people who find one another inside them. One person’s growth can inspire another, and a place created for physical activity can blossom into a safe space where neighbors find confidence, connection, friendship, and belonging.
