In just five months at DSAL Boxing Academy, thirteen-year-old Erwin Olmeda found something he didn't know he was looking for: a place where he belongs.
What started as a return to boxing became something much more significant - a pathway to better mental health, stronger relationships, and a complete shift in how he channels his energy.
When Erwin and his parents discovered DSAL together, they were searching for structure and activity. What they found was a community that would transform how Erwin approaches not just boxing, but life itself.
"DSAL has helped me become a better person and improve my overall mental health. Ever since I started coming to this gym, I've felt happier and more positive in my daily life."
That shift didn't happen by accident. From day one, Erwin was welcomed into a culture of support and encouragement. His coaches created an environment where a newcomer can feel like family right from the start.
"I'm truly grateful to Coach Mickey, Coach Miguel, Coach Bahati, and everyone at the gym for welcoming me and making me feel like I belong. They've always been there for me, offering support, guidance, and encouragement."
For a young person navigating the challenges of adolescence, feeling genuinely welcomed and supported can be deeply transformative.
"This gym isn't just a place to train - it's a community that has made a real difference in my life."
His coaches notice how Erwin has embraced that community. He arrives each day with a positive attitude, ready to get to work. He volunteers to help with classes and helps maintain the gym, treating the space as someone who understands they're part of something worth preserving. He’s not only a talented boxer, but also a dedicated student of the sport. He's humble, respectful, and carries himself the right way, always saying 'yes, sir' and 'thank you' - the mark of someone who's learned that respect flows both ways.
But perhaps the most important transformation has been internal. Erwin talks openly about how boxing redirected his energy away from destructive paths.
"It helped me realize that fighting at school and getting in trouble isn't worth it. I've learned that putting my energy into training and improving myself is a much better path. Boxing has taught me discipline, control, and how to handle my emotions in a positive way."
This is the heart of what our programs aim to accomplish. Along with athletic skills, they provide young people with tools for managing anger, frustration, and conflict. They offer alternatives to violence. They show youth that discipline and hard work lead somewhere worth going.
The physical changes have been noticeable too. Erwin has lost weight, gained strength, and built endurance through the challenging training regimen. But he's quick to note that the progress is both physical and mental - the two reinforcing each other in a positive cycle.
"It's challenging, but I've lost weight and gotten stronger because of it. The hard work has really paid off, and I can see the progress both physically and mentally."
The friendships he's built in the gym have become part of his support system. When asked what he likes most about the program, Erwin returns to that sense of belonging.
"What I like most is how kind and helpful everyone is. From the very beginning, they made me feel welcome and supported. They treat me like I've been part of this gym for years, not like a newcomer. It truly feels like a family here, and that's what makes it so special."
That sense of family has tangible impacts. Erwin reports less stress and anxiety, more confidence, better grades and school attendance, and staying out of trouble. He's made new friends. He's developed discipline. And he's extending that sense of belonging to others by inviting a friend to join too.
His coaches see a young boxer with real potential - someone who leads by example, studies the sport seriously, and carries himself with the humility and respect that defines great athletes. They are confident that one day they'll see him shine in the ring.
But the real victory is already happening. Erwin came here looking for boxing and found a community. He came here to get stronger and discovered mental fortitude. He arrived feeling like a newcomer and was treated like family.
"This gym is truly something I needed in my life. I wanted to get back into boxing, and joining DSAL gave me that opportunity. I'm really grateful to be part of a place that feels like home and pushes me to grow both in and out of the ring."
Erwin's story is proof of the value youth programs provide by creating authentic community - more than just training sessions - they're spaces where young people feel genuinely valued, supported, and believed in. His transformation from someone getting in trouble at school to someone channeling that energy into discipline and self-improvement shows the preventive power of programs that meet youth where they are and show them a different path forward.
In five months, Erwin found his place. And in finding it, he's become someone who helps others find theirs too.
