Game Changers - Boxing Champion Damian Reyes

Damian manages what many adults would find overwhelming: a full-time job, full-time college coursework with a 3.5 GPA, and serious training as an amateur boxer. For four years, he's maintained this balancing act without fanfare or complaint, showing up consistently to DSAL Boxing Academy to quietly put in the work.

That quiet consistency defines Damian's approach. While some athletes train aggressively, Damian trains with focus. During open gym hours, he drills techniques with tireless dedication until he masters them. He listens to his coaches, applies their feedback, and returns to the fundamentals again and again until they become second nature.

His coaches take pride in his willingness to learn, his openness to correction, and his patience to perfect a movement through repetition rather than rushing ahead. It's the mark of someone who understands that real growth happens in the details, in the hundred small adjustments that eventually add up to transformation.

"This program has made me feel welcomed and has made me feel stronger and more confident in myself. I love the coaches - they really help all of us get better and they push us to be better."

For an individual managing the demands of both work and school, DSAL Boxing Academy provides something essential: a space where Damian can show up as himself, focus on personal growth, and be part of something larger than his individual responsibilities.

"I feel more confident, and I've made new friends. Having teammates is a good feeling because it's good to know you have people that will have your back."

For young adults, building new friendships can be challenging. The gym offers a social anchor, a place where connections form through shared effort and mutual respect.

The importance of community grows even larger when you're juggling multiple commitments. Boxing gives Damian a team - people who understand the discipline required to show up day after day, who support each other through tough training sessions, and who create accountability that goes both ways.

Damian also recognizes the broader impact of programs like DSAL Boxing Academy on the community.

"I see this program helping kids stay out of trouble and helping the community be healthy and happy about themselves."

That observation comes from someone who's seen the program from the inside for four years - long enough to watch younger members come in, find their footing, and channel their energy into something constructive. Damian understands that boxing isn't just about fighting. It's about focus, discipline, and giving young people a positive outlet when they need it most.

His ability to maintain excellence across work, academics, and athletics - all while remaining humble and coachable - makes Damian the kind of role model our programs are designed to develop. He demonstrates that dedication doesn't require being loud. Sometimes the most powerful transformations happen quietly, one training session at a time, in the spaces where youth are welcomed, challenged, and supported to become their best selves.
