In just one year with the DSAL Boxing Academy, Armando Carriedo has become a standout example of what dedication, discipline, and the right support system can make possible. What began as a personal step toward self-improvement has grown into a transformation that impacts not only his own life, but those around him - friends, teammates, and community members alike.
Armando entered the program eager to learn, but still working to manage nerves and build confidence. Through steady practice, mentorship, and his own determination, he’s learned to stay calm under pressure and trust both his training and his coaches. Over time, he became known in the gym for leading through his actions: showing up, working hard, listening, and encouraging others by example.
“I like being part of this program because it pushes me to be my best, both in the gym and in life. I enjoy learning new skills, getting stronger, and seeing the progress I’ve made.”
And his progress is unmistakable. Armando has embraced healthier habits, increased his focus, and built confidence that extends well beyond the ring. He talks openly about how the structure of the DSAL boxing has kept him grounded:
“This program has helped me stay focused and out of trouble by giving me structure, discipline, and a positive outlet for my energy. Instead of getting involved in fights or other problems, I spend my time training, learning, and improving myself.”
For Armando, this transformation has also sparked something bigger: leadership. Friends saw the changes he was making - his improved energy levels, his discipline, his pride - and wanted to experience the same.
“My participation has encouraged some of my friends to join the program because they saw the progress I was making… now I’m proud to be inspiring others to train, stay active, and be part of the team.”
That ripple effect is another benefit of youth programs like DSAL Boxing - we don’t just shape individual athletes - we strengthen entire communities.
“I remember one session where I finally nailed a combination I had been struggling with for weeks - Coach Geri nodded, and I felt proud because all my hard work had finally paid off.”
That small exchange, was a meaningful one - the kind of breakthrough that fuels the next step forward.
As he continues to grow as both a boxer and a person, Armando is setting a positive example, as his younger sibling trains alongside him.
“This program helps make our community safer and healthier by teaching discipline, respect, and self-control… we’re not only improving ourselves but also setting a positive example for others.”
Armando’s journey is still young, but his story represents exactly what DSAL strives to build - healthy habits, strong role models, and a supportive environment where youth can discover who they are and who they want to become. From his early nervous days at the gym, to stepping into the ring for his first amateur bout, his growth reflects the heart of our mission, where community can grow stronger together.
“Being part of a team where everyone pushes each other, makes every victory even better. I look forward to the future and continuing to grow as a boxer and as a person.”
