DSAL Athlete of the Month: Juan Garcia Lopez, before and after joining Fitness Pathways

DSAL Athlete of the Month: Juan Garcia Lopez

DSAL Boxing Coach Mickey Lopez nominated 16-year-old Brenkwitz student Juan Garcia Lopez as this month’s DSAL Athlete of the Month.

In August 2021, Juan weighed 350 pounds. He decided he was ready to start living a healthier lifestyle and lose weight. Initially, Juan tried losing weight and changing his diet on his own, but he realized that he would need support. He learned that DSAL Boxing classes were available on his school campus and decided to join.

As of January 2022, Juan has lost an incredible 135 pounds! When the DSAL Fitness Pathways Program started back up this month, he jumped at the opportunity to join.

"The boxing workouts were challenging, and I started to see more progress,” said Juan. “At times, I felt like giving up, but Coach Mickey motivated me and pushed me to keep going. Boxing has taught me so many life lessons, like never to give up and to believe in myself. If I can do it you can do it, too.”

Neighborhood Businesses We Love: Baby Bean Pie Cafe

At the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Zakiyyah and Carlton Shaheed were finding it difficult to buy some of their favorite Black Muslim foods, including Navy Bean Pie, which has been a staple in the community since the 1930’s.

Carlton encouraged Zakiyvah to start making her own pies, and these delicious, healthy treats soon became a hit with friends, family, and community members. The Shaheeds soon developed a following, so they decided to formalize and launch their own business and catering company, Baby Bean Pie, LLC.

Baby Bean Burgers, Baby Bean Soup, and much more is available at their kiosk inside the East 14th Eatery in Ashland and on their website. https://www.babybeanpie.com
