DSAL Boxing participants after their first competition!

Four of our DSAL fighters - Armando Carriedo, Alexander Montiel, Fernando Osorio, and Angel Reyes - took on top-level competition at the 2025 Northern California Silver Gloves. For many, it was their first time stepping into the ring, and the experience has already provided invaluable lessons, and set the stage for future wins.

Even in the early stages of their boxing journeys, these young athletes are showing remarkable growth. Each match builds discipline, focus, and resilience, skills that carry over into school, work, and daily life.

“This program has completely changed my life. The journey has pushed me to live a cleaner, more disciplined life - developing healthier habits, improving my focus, and gaining confidence in myself.” - Armando Carriedo

The friendships and mentorships formed at DSAL extend beyond the gym. Athletes learn teamwork, respect, and the power of mutual support, demonstrating what’s possible when a community comes together to lift each other up.

The Ripple Effect: Mentorship and Community

The boxing coaches surrounding our fighter in support

Boxing at DSAL is about more than competition. Every young athlete benefits from a guiding network of coaches, older fighters, and volunteers who guide the boxers in technique, confidence-building, goal-setting, and navigating challenges. The relationships formed inside the gym often translate into positive connections outside it - building a sense of community, belonging, and mutual respect.

For the broader DSAL community, these competitions provide inspiration. Watching local boxers represent the gym on a regional stage shows our youth what’s possible when people are supported, encouraged, and given guidance. Every jab, combination, and bout demonstrates dedication, perseverance, and the power of mentorship.
