New murals adorn the hallways at the Hayward Adult School thanks to artist Suzanne Gayle.
The murals depict a DSAL boxer whose powerful punch toward a giant dandelion puff, sending its seeds drifting down the corridor toward a youth in boxing shorts, who in turn, raises his glove to meet them. Beyond our boxers, a meadow of yellow flowers bloom.
Rendered in shades of blue and bright yellow on the walls of the buildings that support community growing stronger together, the mural captures the essence of what DSAL does.
The strength, discipline, and investment we put into our community today doesn't stay contained - it travels, it spreads, and it finds the next generation already reaching up to receive it.
These community-created murals installed on the Hayward Adult School campus, bring color, culture, and pride to the spaces where our programs take place.
Research consistently shows that beautified public spaces can decrease feelings of abandonment and neglect, increase perceptions of safety, and foster a sense of belonging and community ownership.
These visual transformations communicate to participants and families that this is a space worth caring for and investing in - a message that reinforces the dignity and value of everyone who steps onto the campus.
