Joshua Gonzales has been training with DSAL Boxing for four years.
In that time, he's gotten stronger, more focused, and more disciplined. He has also discovered something about himself: he loves the process of getting better at hard things.
"Boxing training has given me practice in beginning something hard and finishing it. I feel stronger and more focused toward certain goals. My coaches care about my wellbeing and fitness goals. When struggling to lose weight, they gave me strong advice about diet and exercise while also making sure I listened to my body and remained safe."
That investment - coaches who see the whole person, not just the athlete - built the trust and foundation that kept Joshua attending, growing stronger, and eventually stepping into a leadership role himself.
"I love the sense of connection I have with my coaches. My friends hold me accountable to my progress and everyone celebrates when I reach a new level of skill or succeed at a hard task. It all helps me take pride in my abilities."
In his four years here, Joshua has absorbed the lessons of resilience, confidence, and empathy that his coaches model, and he carries them into every corner of his life. He encourages and uplifts his loved ones, tackles new challenges head-on, has helped instruct classes at the gym, and brought a friend to the program - who found his own transformation there as well.
"I genuinely believe that what he learned definitely made an impact on him."
That ripple effect - one person's growth inspiring another's - is one of the most meaningful things a program like this can produce. And Joshua sees it happening beyond his own circle too. After four years of watching the program shape the people around him, he has noticed something shift in the broader community.
"More respect and connection between both adults and kids - and a safe place for them to hang out and socialize outside of school."
"When it comes to boxing, the coaches do a great job of helping people improve their technique, footwork, and overall boxing skills - and that helps improve people's health and fitness for the better. I feel like if something is difficult, then that's a good thing.
As a coach - the only thing expected from you is your best."
The culture Joshua describes - accountability, celebration, connection, and the belief that difficulty is something to move through rather than away from, is one he's internalized deeply, and it has given him a clarity about what kind of life he wants to lead.
"DSAL has helped me stay focused by teaching me discipline and pushing me to improve myself physically. Being in DSAL's boxing class for almost four years has become a big motivator for why I want to pursue joining the USMC - because exercising and self-improvement is something I enjoy and want to keep in my future."
Joshua knows what he wants: a life built around discipline, physical challenge, and continuous self-improvement. Boxing helped him discover that about himself, and now he's entering his next chapter strong and prepared.
Behind him, he leaves a community that shaped him - and that he helped shape in return. Four years of showing up. Four years of getting better at hard things. And a future built on everything he's learned.
We couldn't be prouder of the young man he has become.
We'll be cheering him on every step of the way.
