Muevete Champion Valentino Ortega

Valentino has been a beloved member of DSAL’s dance program for four years, and it’s easy to see why. Our coach Angie says that: “He is a lovely boy who loves to dance. He is respectful, friendly, and smart, and his dedication is inspiring - he never misses a single class.”

Valentino began the program in October 2021 with his Special Education classmates, and this summer, after he graduated, his parents asked if he could transition to the community class so he could continue dancing with his friends.

“The program has been incredible. It motivates me to have a daily routine - making my bed, picking out my clothes, and filling my water bottle. I look forward to going every day. I’m always so excited to dance Zumba!”

Beyond the movement and music, the program has helped Valentino grow in confidence, social skills, and overall well-being.

“I really enjoy interacting with the people in the program. I feel like I belong, and that means a lot to me. I’m always included and never made to feel less. My ideas are listened to, valued, and appreciated, and that makes me feel confident and respected.”

Valentino reports feeling healthier, more energized, and less stressed as well.

“It has helped me sleep better, breathe better, and improve my movements. I feel happier, more confident, and ready to take on new challenges. My caregiver has also started participating with me, and she enjoys it a lot.”

Coach Angie notes that the most remarkable part of Valentino’s journey isn’t just the fitness that he's acquired, but the relationships he’s built and the communication skills he’s gained.

“He has learned how to connect with others and develop amazing relationships. I’ve learned to be a better person thanks to him, and it’s a true honor to have him in my class."

For Valentino, the program has been transformative in every way.

“I wouldn’t change a thing about the program. I think it’s amazing, and I really appreciate everything it’s done for me. I hope it stays open for the community so others can enjoy it too. Thanks to the program, I feel more confident in my own body and get to spend time with my friends, especially those I don’t see often.”

Valentino’s experience highlights the importance of inclusion and being seen and accepted for who you are. Through DSAL’s inclusive programming, he has found a space where his talents are celebrated, his voice is valued, and he can fully participate and thrive - embraced for who he is, as every community member deserves.
