Soccer Champion Galilea Carrillo

When Valentina joined DSAL nearly a year ago, she was a shy, quiet child. Slowly, through dedication and consistent participation in our programs, she began to come out of her shell, and the transformation has been wonderful to see!

Attending classes three to four times a week, Valentina has embraced every opportunity to grow, learn, and connect with others. Soccer quickly became a space where she could build confidence and forge meaningful friendships.

“I like being able to play with the other kids and have fun while I train. The coaches are really nice and help us play soccer.”

Playing alongside her sister also made the transition smoother, allowing Valentina to feel supported while forming her own bonds within the program.

Her hard work and persistence have paid off in exciting ways. At just six years old, Valentina now competes on the Sheriff’s FC soccer team in a league with kids up to ten, showing how skill, dedication, and a safe, encouraging environment can propel young athletes to new heights.

“It has helped me stay more focused and feel really strong.”

Beyond athletics, soccer programming has provided Valentina with a sense of community and belonging.

“I feel more confident, and I’ve made new friends. This program makes it better for everyone because everyone here can be friends and not be mean. I feel happier being able to make new friends because of soccer. Even in school, I’m able to stay more positive and be stronger day to day.”

Valentina’s story illustrates the transformative power of safe, supportive programs. By fostering relationships, promoting teamwork, and giving youth a space to explore their abilities, Health and Fitness programming can help children blossom - not just during play, but at home, in school, and within their communities. Her journey is a testament to what’s possible when children are met where they are, encouraged to try, and supported every step of the way.
